Turning small parts by hand is an essential skill to any watchmaker. One day as a result of a failed attempt to make a small staff for a watch, just out of frustration I decided to keep turning the steel piece and see what comes out of it. The end result looked like a chess piece and I started wondering how small could I actually make one. So I decided to try. As it turns out, pretty small. There's no guarantee this will ever end up being a full set, but it is an intriguing thought. The smaller piece is a whopping 0.2mm tall and the larger one is 0.3mm tall. The entire chess board made to scale would be 1mm x 1mm. It would make a for a pretty unique collectors item. Hmm... maybe.
The picture quality is not great as it is extremely difficult to take pictures of something this small. I actually had to make a lens for my camera for this purpose. See it here.
